Abstract
514,894. Alloys. DANIELS, F. C. T. May 16, 1938, No. 14576. Convention date, April 8, 1937. [Class 82 (i)] Chromium steels'containing not over 10 per cent. of chromium are made by mixing two charges in molten form; the major charge contains a lower proportion of chromium than that ultimately desired and is washed to reduce its carbon content below that ultimately desired; the minor charge contains higher percentages of chromium and carbon than the major charge, and the carbon content amounts to at least one-fourth of the chromium content so that the chromium is combined with the carbon to its maximum capacity. The minor charge may comprise pig iron or scrap or both and the chromium is added thereto in a cupola. The major charge may be made in an electric or open-hearth furnace in which the mixing may take place; if a converter is used the mixing takes place in a ladle. Deoxidizing agents such as silicon and manganese may be added to each charge. Molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium may also be present in the steels. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that nickel and titanium may be present. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
