Abstract

In a process for refining a pig iron containing vanadium, a slag rich in vanadium is obtained by discontinuing the refining of the pig iron at a moment before the iron is decarburized and when all or practically all the vanadium has entered the slag which is separated and used for the production of vanadium compounds, the iron being then removed to a separate furnace and the refining completed. The first stage of the refining process may be carried out in a furnace with an acid lining. When pig-iron mixers are used, the first stage of the process is carried out either previous to the tapping into the mixer or in the mixer itself. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that soda may be added to the bath in the first furnace, sodium vanadate being then formed in the slag from which it can be extracted with water. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
