Abstract
515,253. Iron, manufacture of. MEHTA, F. P. May 23, 1938, No. 15293. Convention date, June 28, 1937. [Class 72] In the production of low sulphur, phosphorus and silicon iron suitable for conversion into steel pig iron containing about 0.5 per cent. of silicon, 0.1 of sulphur and 0.35 of phosphorus is desulphurized until the sulphur content is below 0.06 per cent. and then dephosphorized and desiliconized by filtration through liquid basic oxidizing slag, preferably produced as described in Specification 515,255. The dephospherization &c. may be carried out as described in Specification 509,306. The treated iron may then be converted into steel in an open hearth furnace.
