Abstract
476,774. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Sept. 18, 1936, No. 25437. [Class 39 (i)] The electrodes of high - pressure mercury vapour lamps (from 10-100 atmospheres) having envelopes 4 mm. or less in internal diameter are preserved from contact with the walls of the lamp by sheaths surrounding them. Fig. 1 shows an electrode 2 projecting ¢ - 1 mm. from a thin quartz sheath 4 collapsed onto the lead 3. Fig. 2 shows a sheath formed as a tungsten helix which can be held in place by distorting its rear end to grip the wall of the tube. Dimensions of the tungsten sheath and the electrodes are given. The extent to which liquid mercury extends in the space behind the electrode in operation is adjusted by collapsing the tube onto the lead after the tube is sealed.
