Abstract

780,474. Discharge lamps. CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1954 [Feb. 18, 1953], No. 4601/53. Class 39(1). A high pressure metallic vapour discharge lamp has a closed inner glass envelope 2 separated from and held in position within an outer glass envelope 1 by tubular glass supports 12, 20 sealed to the outer envelope, packings 14, 23 of heat and shock insulating material being inserted between the supports and the inner envelope. The glass supports 12 and 20 have flared ends 13 and 22. A hole 15 is provided in the tube 12. In the construction shown In Fig. 1 a starting electrode 7 is connected by a resistance 8 to the lead 6 to the electrode 4. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the lead 6 to the electrode 4 passes through the body of the inner envelope at 25 and is sheathed with glass 26 which acts as a starting electrode. The glass of the inner envelope 2 may contain a large proportion of quartz and the glass of the outer envelope very little quartz. Fillings of mercury, cadmium or sodium are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification one of the tubular glass supports can be absent and the outer envelope reduced in diameter to form a support for the inner envelope.
