Abstract
464,343. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HARRIS, N. L., and PEARCE, A. G. Oct. 15, 1935, Nos. 28501/35 and 19401/36. [Class 39 (i)] In a sodium-vapour lamp the U-shaped discharge tube 1 is supported in a doublewalled outer envelope 2, 3 by flexible rings 9 bearing on the walls, and by the leads 8, which pass through a pinch 7 in a singlewalled extension 4 of the outer walls 2, 3. The rings may consist of S-pieces 12, Fig. 2, embracing the U-tube and welded to spring rings 13 bearing on the wall 2 ; or pairs of U-shaped springs 16, Fig. 4, are held to the U -tube by bolts 17, the ends 18 resting on the wall 2. A helical portion may be included in each lead 8 to give resilience. A starting electrode may be used consisting of a wire 20 wound round the bend of the U-tube and connected by glass-covered wire 21 to one lead 8 or an auxiliary electrode as described in Specification 454,182, may be used. A brass cap 10, with central insulated contact 24, is received by a socket of insulating material 26, the socket having one contact 28 on its wall ; this contact has recesses 30 to receive wings 23 on the cap and act as a bayonet joint.
