Abstract

725,761. Discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 19, 1953 [June 23, 1952], No. 17010/53. Class 39 (1). A discharge lamp, particularly a flash lamp, comprises a helical discharge tube 1, a transparent bulb 2 surrounding the discharge tube 1 and an ignition electrode 10 in the form of a coiled-coil wire the turns of which are each in contact with the inner wall of the bulb 2 and with two adjacent turns of the discharge tube 1. The coil 10 also acts as a shock-proof fixing for the tube 1 in the bulb 2. The discharge tube 1 is filled with xenon and is made of glass or quartz tubing having an outer diameter of about 6 mms. and wound in about 4¢ turns to form a helix having an outer diameter of about 25 mms. and a pitch of about 7 mms. The cylindrical glass bulb 2 has an inner diameter of about 28 mms. The ignition electrode 10 is made of nickel-chromium wire of about 200Á thickness wound to form a primary coil of about 3 mms. outer diameter having a pitch of about 3 mms. and wound again to form a coiled-coil of about 3¢ turns. The ends of the ignition electrode 10 are secured to the discharge tube 1 by wire rings 11, one of which is connected electrically to a pin 12 of the socket 3.
