[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXX] In apparatus including a hoisting-rope or like barrel 1 adapted to be driven from a wheel 2 first through a spring 3 and thereafter directly, winding of the spring during more than one revolution of the wheel 2 is permitted by the provision of lugs 7, 8, adapted to travel in paths clear of one another, and a freely swinging arm 9 which, when in engagement with both lugs, transmits the direct drive. In the form shown, the direct drive is delayed for nearly two complete revolutions, but further delay may be obtained by the employment of a plurality of arms 9 which come into operation successively. Fig. 5 shows a modification embodying a safetydevice consisting of a cam 14 connected through shaft 13 and lever 12 to the inner end of the spring 3 and urged by a spring 15 towards a holding drum 16 mounted on the shaft of the wheel 2. In the event of breakage of the spring 3 before the direct drive is established, the cam 14 is pulled into engagement with the drum 16 and prevents dropping of the load.
