Abstract

151,216. McLaren, J. & H., and Mc- Laren, H. June 11, 1919. Winding and paying-out apparatus on portable engines; brakes; tension-regulating winding and paying-out apparatus; control-transmitting gear.- In ploughing &c. apparatus in which the plough &c. is pulled to and fro by a rope or cable attached to a winding drum A, Fig. 1, mounted on a motordriven vehicle at each headland, a braking device is provided which automatically applies considerable additional braking pressure to the drum which is paying-out when the plough stops suddenly. Means are also provided for holding this device out of action while the windlass drum is being power driven. The brake shoe 7, Figs. 1 and 4, is pivotally connected to the bell-crank lever 8 which is acted on by a spring 10 of sufficient strength to apply the brake lightly when the rope is being drawn off normally. A rod 14 is passed through one arm of the lever 8 and is connected to a rod 11 which is pivoted to a fixed part of the apparatus and carries a weight 13 resting on the outgoing tail rope. If the plough &c. stops suddenly, the continued rotation of the drum due to its momentum continues the paying-out of the tail-rope which accordingly slackens and the consequent descent of the. weight 13 brings the upper end of the rod 14 into contact with the lever 8 and additional braking pressure is applied. In order to hold the braking-device out of action when the drum is winding, a rod or bar 17 is attached to the brake lever 8 so as to slide in its supporting brackets when the brake lever moves. The rod has a neck or portion of smaller diameter which when the brake is off occupies a position between the plates 18, 19 and opposite a locking- bar 16. This locking-bar is forked at its upper end to engage with the sliding drum pinion f<2>, and has a slot 16<c> capable of engaging with the neck on the rod 17. This latter engagement is effected whenever the drum pinion is thrown into gear, and the brake is consequently then prevented from coming into action.
