Abstract

463,749. Vehicle opening tops. BISHOP, W. H. Dec. 14, 1935, No. 34712. [Class 108 (i)] In vehicle roof openings adapted to be closed by a sliding panel the rear edge of the latter is brought into a position flush with the fixed rear part of the roof by means of one or more lifting members which are operated by means of a handle or lever preferably also serving to operate means for locking the panels in any desired position. As shown in Fig. 3 the lifting members comprise bell-cranks C the free ends 15 of which, when the panel 1 is moved to closed position, bear on abutments 16 on the fixed part of the roof and, when rotated by longitudinal bars 5 from the transverse locking bars 3, lift the rear edge of the panel 1 flush with the roof 18, a rebated part 19 being provided. The locking bars 3 are pivoted to a disc which is operated by the handle 2 the outer ends of the bars engaging notches in the sides of the roof openings. The sides of the panels are provided with runners 21 adapted to slide on guides 22 which may be stepped up at the rear edge of the opening or the runners 21 may be carried by links to permit the raising of the panel. Figs. 6 and 7 show other methods. In Fig. 6 the operating bar or strip 24 draws a cam 25 forward to depress a spring 23 mounted on the panel 1 the free end of the spring bearing on an abutment 27 to raise the panel while in Fig. 7 a rigid wire loop 28 is caused by the bar 24 to depress a spring strip 29 against the abutment 27 and so raise the panel 1.
