Abstract

457,293. Cycle brakes ; hinges. RADNALL, E. A., Vauxhall Works, Dartmouth Street, Birmingham. Sept. 17, 1935, No. 25738. [Class 65 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] In a caliper brake for cycles and like vehicles, of the type in which a pair of levers is pivoted on a headed bolt adapted to be passed through the vehicle frame and provided at its end with a nut for securing the brake in position on the frame, the pivoted levers are engaged between the head of the bolt and an adjustable shoulder which is carried by a threaded portion of the bolt intermediate its ends. The pivoted levers 1, 2 are held between the head 7 of the bolt 6 and a nut 16 which is adjustable along the screw-threaded portion 10 of the bolt. The nut is recessed at 17 and slotted at 18 to accommodate the controlling spring 19 of the brake levers, and this is held in position by a lock nut 20. A washer 21 is interposed between the nut 20 and the vehicle frame. The adjustable shoulder may be in the form of a washer sliding on the portion 10 of the bolt, the requisite pressure being obtained from the nut 20. Anti-friction means in the form of balls or of a ring 15, in one or more pieces, is provided between the pivoted levers, these being formed with grooves 14 which may be of V-section with straight sides or with one straight and one curved side.
