457,023. Friction clutches ; changespeed gearing. SCHOU, C. E. J., 69, Kalfarvei, Bergen, Norway. July 29, 1935, No. 19565/36. Divided out of an application under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 29, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] A multiple clutch suitable for change-speed gearing comprises nested friction clutches which are engaged by spring means common to them all. Thus, spring means 6, Fig. 1, engages all three plate clutches which have driven discs 7, 8, 9 fast respectively upon nested shafts 10, 11, 12. There is a common driving plate 2 which carries a casing 2b forming the abutment of the springs 6. When disengaging levers 60 are free, the springs 6 engage the three clutches simultaneously. As a flange sleeve 23 is moved left of Fig. 1, the clutches are disengaged in the order 7, 8, 9. The sleeve 23 turns the levers 60 clockwise of Fig. 3. At the first step, the levers 60 engage nuts 65 and pull rods 62 and a plate 3 right far enough to free the driven disc 7. The plate 3 like other plates 4, 5 slides on bolts 2d carried by the plate 2. The discs 8, 9 are still both driven and held engaged by the springs 6. At the second step, the rods 62 are still carried right, but rods 63 farther from pivots 61 of the levers 60 are engaged and carried a greater distance right so that the plates 3, 4 separate and free the disc 8, leaving the disc 9 alone driven. Further rocking of the levers 60 about their pivots 61 causes rods 64 still farther out to be engaged and pulled right at a still greater rate so that the plates 5, 4 are separated to free the last clutch 9.
