Abstract

392,572. Change-speed gearing. BRAMBLE, W. H. and R U S T 0 N & HORNSBY, Ltd., Sheaf Iron Works, Water side South, Lincoln. Nov. 14, 1931, No. 31552. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing comprises a multiple selective clutch by which single discs g2, h<2>, i2, Fig. 1, are driven alternatively from a cage or housing f fast on a hollow driving-shaft e. The shaft e is driven constantly from a short shaft b and the discs g<2>, h<2>, i<2> are connected directly and through sleeves and countershaft reducing trains to a central shaft g which passes on the drive through a suitable reversing-gear 31. The clutch discs h<2>, i<2>, which are faced on both sides, are housed in the cage f side by side, between an end wall k and an intermediate web or wall l fast in the cage, and between the discs h2, i2 is an annular clutch disc m slidably mounted in the cage. The disc m is moved to the right to grip the disc i<2> between itself and the wall k so that the disc i<2> is driven. The disc m is moved to the left to similarly grip the disc h<2> between itself and the web l. Any number of additional pairs of single driven discs may be similarly housed in and driven selectively by the cage f. A separate annular disc o sliding on the cage is adapted to grip the odd driven disc g<2> between itself and the other end cage wall p. The disc m is supported on shouldered rods v which are moved positively in both directions within the cage by a central muff q to which the rods are connected by radial levers r pivoted on the cage wall p. The disc o is supported on shouldered pull rods 7 connected to a muff 6 by levers r<1>. The muffs q, 6 are connected by levers 20, 13 and springs to rods 19, 14, Fig. 3, respectively. The paired clutches are operated through two springs 26, 27 and two separate plungers 25, 24, respectively. The odd clutch is operated through a single spring 15 and a single plunger 17. The plungers 25, 24, 17 are arranged in a row and adapted to be depressed selectively by a manual control lever 12 moving in a guide slot, not shown.
