Abstract
Solutions of organic sulphides in sulphur are manufactured by maintaining a body of molten sulphur at a temperature not exceeding 160 DEG C., preferably 140--160 DEG C., and bubbling an aliphatic unsaturated hydrocarbon in gaseous condition through it. The reaction may be assisted by the presence, as catalyst, of an inorganic sulphide, e.g. copper sulphide, or an organic sulphide, e.g. the mercaptans, or of chlorinated diphenyls, chlorinated naphthalenes, phenol-sulphur chloride resins, camphor or diphenylguanidine. Some of these substances act also as modifying agents, whilst there may further be used as modifying agents cotton seed oil, vegetable oils, asphalt or ozokerite, or the sulphides produced by the reaction of china wood oil or oleic acid with sulphur. Suitable unsaturated hydrocarbons are olefines in pure or diluted state, e.g. in the form of still gas (olefines diluted with carbon dioxide and other adulterants), or acetylene. The products are suitable for extrusion into various shapes, for impregnating cellulosic materials, fabrics, (e.g. for the construction of hose, flexible ventilators, packing materials and flexible diaphragms), cement or stone, as thin coating films, as bonding agents, e.g. in bonding felt to metal, for lining pickling vats, electrolytic cells or acid tanks, as substitutes for rubber and as insulating materials. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of the product obtained by bubbling acetylene through sulphur at 133--137 DEG C.
