Abstract
Methacrylic acid is manufactured from the crude methacrylamide-sulphuric acid mixture, obtained by reacting acetone cyanhydrin with sulphuric acid, by adding the methacrylamide-sulphuric acid product to water, distilling the resulting mixture, adding to the distillate an organic solvent for methacrylic acid which is immiscible with water and separating the organic solvent layer containing dissolved methacrylic acid from the aqueous layer. Suitable solvents are aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and toluene, aliphatic liquid hydrocarbons such as petroleum ether and chlorinated hydrocarbons such as ethylene dichloride, perchlorethylene, trichlorethylene and carbon tetrachloride. In carrying out the reaction an anti-polymerization agent, for example, a mixture of copper sulphate and hydroquinone may be used. In the examples, the process was carried out using (a) trichlorethylene, (b) perchlorethylene, (c) carbon tetrachloride, (d) benzene, (e) petroleum ether, (f) ethylene dichloride, and (g) toluene as solvents. Specification 456,533 is referred to.
