Abstract
Acetic anhydride is prepared by mixing acetic acid with at least one sulphur-containing compound which is either liquid or gaseous at about 20 DEG C. and also with a dehydration catalyst, passing the mixture so formed through a heated reaction vessel constructed of an alloy containing nickel so that acetic acid is dehydrated to form ketene, separating the ketene from the water and unchanged acetic acid, and absorbing the ketene in glacial acetic acid to form acetic anhydride. The catalyst may be a volatile phosphorus-containing compound, and a volatile basic nitrogen compound may be added to the vapours leaving the reaction vessel (see Specifications 435,219 and 441,956). The sulphur compound is preferably carbon disulphide, but others specified are hydrogen sulphide, ethyl mercaptan, thioglycollic acid and allyl isothiocyanate.
