Abstract
452,502. Cold-air machines. JERRARD, E. P., 9, Currie Street, Oaklands, Johannesburg, South Africa. Nov. 16, 1934, No. 32962. [Class 29] [See also Group XXVI] Comprises apparatus for cooling air in mines by utilizing the heat contained in the hot, semi - saturated air for the production of motive power. A compound compressed air reciprocating - engine or turbine is supplied with compressed-air which is heated between the stages of expansion by being passed through a heat-exchanger disposed in an air conduit or tunnel over which the mine air is passed by a fan driven by the motor. The apparatus may be associated with a hoist of the Ward-Leonard type the compressed-air motor replacing the electric motor and its starter. A portable combination comprising ing an electric lamp, an atmospheric air fan, a motor and a heat-exchanger is described. In the apparatus shown compressed air is expanded in the H.P. cylinder 14 and exhausted through passages 19 in the exchanger to the low-pressure cylinder 13 the exhaust from which passes through a pipe to the tunnel 22. The motor drives a shaft 16 which drives a fan 23. In a modification, the heat-exchanger tubes are arranged in semicircular fashion parallel to the conduit axis. In the turbine arrangement, the high and low-pressure rotors are arranged coaxially on either side of the heat-exchanger. Specifications 11373/95, [Class 29], and 16340/12, [Class 7 (i)], are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the heat-exchanger may be of the kind described in Specification 215,265, [Class 29].
