Abstract
Cellulose fibres and the like are treated in the absence of urea or thiourea with an acid amide containing less than 12 carbon atoms and with formaldehyde or the like, and are then subjected to a raised temperature to bring about condensation. Suitable amides are acetamide, malonamide, benzenedisulphonamide, phthalamide allophanamide, asparagin, and succinimide. Catalysts, buffer substances, softening agents, loading agents, and the like may be present. In an example, the cellulose material is treated with a solution of acetamide, dried, and heated with formaldehyde under pressure. In a second example, the goods are impregnated with a solution containing succinamide or succinimide and lactic acid, pressed, treated with paraformaldehyde, dried, and heated. In a further example, the process of the previous example is modified by using for the first impregnation a solution containing allophanamide and mono- and di-sodium phosphate.
