Abstract
448,842. Mercury - vapour rectifiers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. March 20, 1936, No. 8437. Convention date, March 30, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] The cathode spot is located by a metal or insulating ring 2, Fig. 1, and the level of the mercury is maintained by means of a pump which causes the mercury to flow continuously over a rim 5. A tungsten or molybdenum ring 2 projects above the mercury level and is supported and cooled by vanes 3 attached to the cooled cathode container 4. The mercury is circulated through the channel 8, container 4, and four pipes 11 by means of an iron core 7 and coils 6, energized by alternating-current. Evaporation of mercury is minimized by a metal or quartz screen 15 and condensate flows along the wall 13 to the pipes 11 in which cooling tubes 14 may be provided. The wall 13 is insulated from the main container and the terminal 19 is screwed or soldered to the cathode container. In a modification, the coils 6, Fig. 3, and an iron core 7 are used to circulate mercury through tube 17 and the cathode container, over the rim 5 and through the tube 11.
