Abstract

Smooth fibres such as rabbits' and hares' hair may be spun into yarns and felted by first subjecting them to a chemical roughening or "secreting" treatment, and then spinning them with the aid of a mucilaginous substance. Fabric or hosiery manufactured from such yarn may be fulled with an acid bath to cause felting, e.g. with a solution of sulphuric acid of 1--2 DEG B<\>ae., or a solution of lactic acid of 1--3 DEG B<\>ae. The "secreting" treatment may be effected for example by impregnating the fleece with nitrate of mercury in the cold and drying at a high temperature, the effect being to produce microscopic indentations on the fibres.
