Abstract

Yarns, treating with Liquids. -Viscose silk acquires a feel, softness, and lustre resembling those of natural silk, an improved elasticity and extensibility, a greater capacity against creasing, and an increased resistance to mercerizing-agents, by treatment with a caustic alkali solution of more than 30 per cent strength, for example, of 36-50 per cent, at a temperature not higher than 25‹ C., for example, at 15-25‹ C. The treatment may also be applied to staple fibre, and artificial wool, hair and straw. The material treated may be in the form of threads, yarn in skeins or cops, or as warps ; it may be in the completely finished condition, or the treatment may be applied during the manufacture of the material after the coagulation or fixation process has been completed. During the treatment, the material may be in the stretched or unstretched condition. After treatment, the material may be washed with hot or cold water, or it may be introduced into an acid bath, for example, 10-20 per cent sulphuric acid.
