Abstract

In the wet-spinning of polyacrylonitrile fibres, a solution of polyacrylonitrile, or a copolymer thereof containing at least 80 per cent by weight of acrylonitrile, in aqueous ethylene carbonate, containing 2.5-18.5 per cent by weight of the solution of water, is extruded into an aqueous ethylene carbonate coagulating bath at 40-90 DEG C. containing 20-38 per cent by weight of ethylene carbonate, and the formed fibres are first stretched at a temperature below 65 DEG C., at least a portion of their travel under stretching tension being in air and while the fibres contain 75-200 per cent of ethylene carbonate, and then further stretched at a temperature above 90 DEG C., their ethylene carbonate content during at least a portion of their travel under the second stretching tension being less than that of the fibres undergoing the first stretching operation. The first stretching may be effected entirely in air or partly in air and partly in an aqueous liquid. The second stretching may be effected in a hot aqueous liquid, the aqueous liquid washing out at least some of the ethylene carbonate, or it may be effected in steam or on a heated roll or other surface, in which latter cases the fibres are first washed to reduce the ethylene carbonate content. The coagulating bath may contain small amounts of glycols, e.g. ethylene and dipropylene glycols. The fibres may be finally washed, heat-treated and dried. Copolymers of acrylonitrile with minor amounts of one or more vinyl compounds, many of which are specified, may be employed. Specification 716,081 is referred to.
