Abstract
Alkylaryl amines are obtained from a -arylamino- or a -alkylarylamino-aliphatic acids, containing more than nine carbon atoms in the acid residue and not more than two carbon atoms in the alkyl group, if present, by heating the acids in an inert solvent until carbon dioxide is no longer evolved. An example is given in which a -anilinostearic acid is heated to above 200 DEG C. in paraffin oil to yield heptadecylaniline. Reference is made also to the treatment of a -methylanilinolauric acid. When a -alkylarylamino acids are treated, an alkyl ester of an a -arylamino acid is obtained as a by-product, by migration of the alkyl group to the carboxylic group; this ester may be saponified, and the a -arylamino acid so obtained may be decarboxylated as described. The starting materials are obtainable by treating the corresponding a -halogen aliphatic acids with aryl amines or mono- or di-alkylaryl amines such as mono- or di-methylaniline.
