Abstract
The production of camphene and isobornyl esters by heating pinene hydrochloride or oil mixtures containing it with a fatty acid and a zinc salt of the fatty acid is carried out at temperatures above the boiling point of the fatty acid and consequently under pressure. The mixture of fatty acid and zinc salt may be used repeatedly, if the zinc chloride be removed according to Specification 2488/13 by the addition of an acetate, such as sodium acetate, or a metal oxide. According to the examples, pinene hydrochloride is heated in a digester at a temperature of 120-150 DEG C. for some hours with a previously used solution of zinc acetate and acetic acid. This solution contains, in addition to the zinc acetate and acetic-acid, some sodium acetate, sodium chloride and a little terpene. Sodium acetate is then added, and after again heating the mixture for a short time, the terpene layer is allowed to separate out and is removed. The remaining solution is then re-used for the treatment of more pinene hydrochloride.
