Abstract
Ph ophorbide B is converted into an iron compound having therapeutic properties by treatment with an iron salt in the presence of a solvent, suitably in a stream of an inert gas, the product being purified, if desired, by recrystallization from organic acids such as propionic acid with the addition of hydrochloric acid, if necessary in the absence of oxygen. According to an example, pure iron is dissolved in glacial acetic acid in a current of carbon dioxide, and common salt is added to the solution. Ph ophorbide B is added, and the mixture heated in a stream of carbon dioxide until the ph ophorbide dissolves. On cooling a precipitate is formed, which is purified by washing first with glacial acetic acid, then with water, and subsequently recrystallizing from a mixture of propionic and hydrochloric acids. The product is stated to have the formula C35H36N4O6FeCl.
