Abstract
Natural or artificial cellulose materials are treated with an aqueous alkali of at least 11 per cent strength, followed by treatment with an a b -alkylene oxide or hydroxy derivative thereof; the material may be subsequently treated with an acylating agent. Examples of suitable treating agents are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or glycide, preferably used in the proportion of up to 1\ba1/2\be molecular proportions per molecule of cellulose as C6H10O5. In an example 14 parts by weight of bleached cotton fabric is mercerized under tension in 50 DEG Tw. aqueous caustic soda, the fabric is wrung out and suspended in a chamber into which 3.8 parts ethylene oxide are passed the chamber is left closed for 17 hours, the fabric is then washed and dried; the product is a stiff organdie, which becomes limp when wet. The product may be further treated in a bath at 95 DEG C. comprising 20 parts dry pyridine and 80 parts acetic anhydride for 2 hours; the stiffness is then unaffected by moisture. In a further example, the ethylene oxide is replaced by a solution of glycide in acetone; other suitable solvents are dioxane, benzene, tetrachlorethane, and carbon tetrachloride.
