Abstract
Cellulosic materials such as cotton, cotton linters, wood, wood pulp obtained by the soda, sulphite or any other process and cellulosic materials obtained from grasses, straw or nut shells are treated with alkaline solutions such as a caustic soda solution at temperatures below atmospheric and preferably between 0 DEG C. and 10 DEG C. The treated material may be etherified by means of an appropriate ester for instance an ethyl, methyl or benzyl ester in the presence of an alkali. If an ester is to be formed the treated material is preferably treated with formic, acetic or other suitable organic acid. The invention may also be applied to the mercerization of cotton, the cotton yarn or fabric being treated and then washed under tension. In an example cotton linters are treated with 9 per cent caustic soda solution at 8 DEG C. to 9 DEG C. Specification 249,173, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.
