Abstract
Cellulose is acetylated by contacting substantially dry fibres with acetic acid, limiting the amount of acid contained in the fibres to 10-60% by weight, by removal of excess acid if necessary; contacting the resulting swollen fibres with acetic anhydride at a temperature from ambient to 140 DEG C. and then subjecting the fibre to noncatalysed acetylation with superheated vapour of acetic anhydride at 150 DEG C.-220 DEG C. to form dry cellulose fibres having an acetyl content of up to 30% by weight. The cellulose, in the form of wood pulp, cotton linters, mattes, webs, sheets or fabrics, may be sprayed with, or immersed in, the reagents in a continuous process or a batch process. In one embodiment, a moving sheet of cellulose fibre is sprayed with acetic acid to swell the fibre. The sheet is then sprayed with acetic anhydride while it passes over a suction box, causing displacement of a proportion of the acetic acid by the acetic anhydride, and also some acetylation. The cellulose sheet, saturated with a mixture of acid and anhydride then enters a cloud reactor in which it is passed over a series of rolls and is contacted, e.g. for 15-90 minutes, with acetic anhydride vapour at 150 DEG C.-220 DEG C. The acetylated sheet retains its original form.
