Abstract

Filaments, fibres, threads, yarns, fabrics and like materials consisting of or containing cellulose acetate or other organic ester of cellulose are substantially completely saponified by an aqueous medium containing sodium hydroxide in a concentration of from 0.6 to 1 per cent by weight and an inorganic salt which has an inhibiting effect on the swelling action of the saponifying medium for the cellulose ester. Specified inorganic salts are the sulphates of sodium and potassium. The saponification may be effected on materials having a basis of, for example, cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, aceto-propionate or acetobutyrate, and the process is applicable to stretched yarns of such material. The process substantially minimizes the comparative reduction in breaking strength of the materials which usually occurs on saponification. To the saponifying bath containing sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphate, other soluble salts, e.g. sodium chloride, sodium acetate or potassium acetate may be added. Numerous examples are given, in one of which cellulose acetate yarn is immersed in a saponification bath comprising an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide containing sodium sulphate and sodium acetate at 80 DEG C. The yarn is then removed, washed and dried. Specification 150,989, [Class 15 (ii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the saponification treatment as applied to fabrics containing a mixture of cellulose acetate and other textile materials such as silk, cotton, or regenerated cellulose and the treatment may be local. Other saponifying agents such as potassium hydroxide, sodium or potassium carbonate or silicate, sodium sulphite and trisodium phosphase are also specified. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
