Abstract
Spongy cohesive gold for dental fillings is prepared by precipitating gold from a solution, heating the precipitate in a high boiling liquid, such as concentrated phosphoric acid or commercial (unpurified) sulphuric acid, at a temperature between 150 and 250 DEG C., and washing and drying the precipitate. In use, the tooth cavity need not be dried and the gold is inserted by means of an instrument moistened with a dilute antiseptic solution and is compacted by pressure and burnished. Preferably, a gold chloride solution is neutralized by an alkali, heated to 80 DEG C. and the gold precipitated by oxalic acid or sodium nitrite added in excess. The solution and precipitate are then boiled and any gold remaining in solution is precipitated by addition of oxalic acid if sodium nitrite was used for the first precipitation or by addition of sodium oxalate or an alkali if oxalic acid was used. The pH of the solution should be between 6 and 7 at this point. The liquid is then decanted off and the precipitate washed in water, heated to between 150 and 250 DEG C. in commercial sulphuric acid, repeatedly boiled and washed with distilled water, and dried below 100 DEG C. The treatment of gold precipitated by formaldehyde, formic acid or hydrogen peroxide is also referred to. Specification 380,324 is referred to.ALSO:Spongy cohesive gold for dental purposes is prepared by precipitating gold from a solution, heating the precipitate in a high boiling liquid, such as concentrated phosphoric acid or commercial (unpurified) sulphuric acid, to a temperature between 150 and 250 DEG C., and washing and drying the precipitate.
