Abstract
The hydrolysis of solutions containing titanium is initiated or maintained by the addition of an organic acid-binding substance such as hexamethylene-tetramine, acetamide, or acetaldehyde ammonia, the acid-binding substance being preferably added to the solution at say 85 DEG C. a short while before hydrolysis is effected by boiling. Acid-poor titanium-rich solutions such as are used in the process of the parent Specification may be employed, the amount of acid-binding substance being insufficient to cause any considerable decrease in the total acidity of the solution. Hydrolysis may take place in the presence of an extender such as an alkaline-earth metal sulphate, and the washed and dried precipitate be prepared for use as a pigment by calcination at say 875 DEG C. Calcination may be effected in the presence of neutralizing agents, sintering agents, phosphoric acid or phosphates, or sodium sulphate.
