Abstract
432,385. Steam traps. YARNALLWARING CO., Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of McKee, J. F.; 218, Wabash Avenue, Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) May 22, 1934, Nos. 15289 and 15290. Convention dates, June 3, 1933 and March 17, 1934. [Class 64 (ii)] In a steam trap, flow of condensate from inlet 27 to outlet 28 is controlled by a valve 21 provided with a shoulder 20 loosely fitting a cylinder 35, and with a disc 37 at the lower end. The valve is opened by the pressure of accumulated condensate, and the temperature increases as the condensate discharges so that condensate leaking into the chamber 18 evaporates and the pressure closes the valve. A throttled passage 24 is provided in the valve for slow discharge of condensate. Impact of condensate or steam against the disc 37 tends to close the valve. The dimensions of the throttled passages and the pressures are related by a formula which is given. In a modification, Fig. 5, (not shown), the valve body is surrounded by a dirt filter. In Fig. 11, (not shown), a non- leaking piston is employed and its two sides are connected by a passage in the casing controlled by a valve. In Fig. 13, (not shown), the shoulder 20 is replaced by a diaphragm, and in Fig. 14, (not shown), the passage 24 is controlled by a bimetallic strip. Other modifications are described in which the cylinder 35 is tapered and longitudinally adjustable, or in which a tapered pin projects into the passage 24.
