[Class 100 (iii)] A type-matrix holder comprises an apron or bar which is associated with one wall of the holder and is movable towards and away from the opposite wall to provide a matrix-receiving opening of variable width permitting individual matrices to be shifted crosswise of the line thereof in the holder. The matrix holder comprises a frame 22 having stationary end walls 29, 31 and sides 25, 34 defining a matrix-receiving opening 23 for matrices 24, the side 25 being provided with a scale 26. The matrices are clamped up by a sliding end guard 28 operated by a screw 30, and the opening is of greater width than the length of the portions of the matrices which extend thereinto, whereby the matrices may be shifted relatively to each other crosswise of the opening. The wall 34 is provided with a longitudinal recess 35 in which is pivoted a bar 33 on end trunnions, journalled in the end pieces 29, 31. The lower edge of one end of the bar 33 is provided with a pin which engages in an eccentric groove on a rotatable member 37, so that when the latter is rotated, the bar 33 is swung towards or away from the matrices. In use with matrices of different founts, the upper case letters are slid crosswise of the holder to abut against the apron 33 while the lower case letters abut against the wall 25. The matrices are lightly clamped and the member 37 is rotated to move the upper case letters into alignment. The device may be employed for aligning matrices of the same fount, and a scale may be marked on the knob 37. In a modification, the adjustment is effected by means of a longitudinal bar which engages by a tongue and groove connection with the wall 34, the tongue and groove being inclined to the longitudinal axis of the bar, whereby when latter is caused to slide longitudinally relatively to the wall 34 it is also given a transverse movement towards the wall 25. for aligning purposes. The sliding movement may be obtained by means of a threaded stud extending outwardly from the end wall 29 and carrying a nut which extends into a transverse slot on the bar, and the latter may be furnished with a scale.
