Abstract
805,815. Guillotine cutting machines. LAWSON CO. Inc., E. P. Sept. 23, 1957 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 29856/57. Class 31 (1). In a guillotine machine for cutting a pile of paper 17 supported on a table 20 provided with a slot 25 through which an extension 23 of the back gauge 21 passes to engage a screw 26 for driving the back gauge, at least the portion of the slot between the back gauge and the cutting knife 11 is closed by a spring ribbon which is flexibly resilient both longitudinally and transversely, the back gauge being operable on movement away from the knife to draw the ribbon into the slot and the ribbon being removed from the slot by movement of the back gauge towards the knife. As shown in Fig. 1, one end of a spring ribbon 34 is secured to a spindle 36 adjacent one end of the slot 25 and the opposite end of the ribbon is secured by means of screws 38 to the front end of the back gauge. The slot is provided with ledges 32, Fig. 6, on which the ribbon rests, the ribbon assuming an arcuate cross-sectional shape when it is extended. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), one end of the spring ribbon is secured to the extension on the back gauge while the opposite end of the ribbon is secured to a spindle adjacent the front end of the slot. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the spring ribbon 34b is passed round spindles 40, 41, arranged at opposite ends of the slot, one end of the ribbon being secured to the front end of the back gauge by screws 38b and the opposite end of the ribbon by an adjustable member 42 to the rear end of the back gauge. The ribbon 34b is kept taut by means of a spring 43. Specification 707,090 is referred to.
