Abstract

733,080. Opening envelopes. STEEN, W. B., and STEEN, L. A. July 1, 1952, No. 16558/52. Class 31 (1). Mechanism for opening envelopes by cutting a narrow strip from one or more edges thereof comprises a rotary cylinder 1 cairying an offset blade 9 coacting with a pivoted non-rotary blade 11 which is pressed towards the cylinder by means of tension springs 13 connected to fixed anchorages 15, the cylinder being provided with end collars 8 to maintain a gap of the desired width between the non-rotary blade and the cylinder. The rotary blade is provided with front and rear cutting edges 10, 10A so that the cylinder can be reversed when one cutting edge becomes blunt. The tension springs may be replaced by compression springs either extending between fixed anchorages and a downward extension of the non-rotary blade or bearing on the front of the non-rotary blade above its pivot line 12. The envelopes are guided by a platen 18 and entered through a slot 17 in a cover 16, and a removable tray 20 is provided for catching trimmings. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), three sets of rotary and non- rotary cutters are provided.
