Abstract
The destructive hydrogenation of solid carbonaceous materials containing basic constitutents is carried out in the presence of compounds furnishing halogen halides under the reaction conditions in an amount such that at least 0,1 per cent calculated on the solid carbonaceous material of halogen halide in excess of that required to neutralize the basic constituents is present in the reaction chamber. The carbonaceous material is preferably cleaned from ashy constituents prior to entry into the reaction chambers, e.g. by floating it on a liquid medium of suitable specific gravity organic or inorganic decomposable halogen compounds may be used particularly chlorine compounds, e.g. carbon tetrahalides, chloroform, chlorine compounds of benzine, naphthalene &c., methyl or ethyl chlorides, sulphur mono- or tetrachlorides, ammonium or other nitrogen base chlorides. Free halogen, e.g. chlorine, bromine or iodine or halogen halides may also be added in addition to or in place of the compounds furnishing halogen halide. a coal paste comprising 50 per cent bituminous coal, 35 per cent heavy oil, and 15 per cent middle oil, and containing 0,03 per cent tin oxalate and 0,5 per cent carbon tetrachloride or catalyst is fed together with hydrogen at the rate of 16 kgs. per hour into a reaction chamber of 24 litres capacity maintained at 460 DEG C., and 220 atmospheres pressure. The products obtained comprise 18 per cent petrol, 35 per cent middle oil, 22 per cent heavy oil, 19 per cent gas, 7,5 per cent aqueous liquor and 5 per cent insoluble residue. Specifications 253,507, 279,410, and 299,021, [all in Class 32], and 425,679 are referred to in the Complete Specification, and 407,227 in the first Provisional Specification.
