Abstract

419,961. Hair - curling appliances. EDEL, J. G., 19, Hungerford Road, Holloway, London. May 24, 1933, No. 14953. [Class 131.] A hair curler comprises a rod 1 having means, such as a collar 2, for longitudinally compressing a tress 9<a> wound on the rod between such means and an abutment 6 which prevents the hair slipping off. The abutment is formed with a slot 7 for receiving a binding string or the like, and is of such size that, although it enables the rod to be attached close to the scalp, it allows the rod to hang freely from the scalp. The abutment may be formed with a flat face 7<a>, Fig. 6, and the slot 7 may extend into a curved ridge 8. The abutment is secured to a rod 4 passing through the rod 1 and provided with a knob 1<a> whereby it may be rotated for winding the hair. The collar 2 may be formed with a reduced portion having grooves 3 for engaging the wound tress 9<a> or binding-material thereon. Alternatively, the engaging portion may be cup-shaped or in the form of an extension adapted to overlap the tress. The collar may be a tube frictionally engaging the rod or it may contain a spring which allows of rotation only in one direction. In this case reduced portions may extend on both sides of the collar so that on reversing its position it can be rotated in the opposite direction.
