[Class 8 (i).] The upper piston a of a pair of internal-combustion engine pistons working in a cylinder A drives a compressor piston d secured to it. By holding the compressor inlet valves f open, the assembly becomes an ordinary engine ; alternatively the compressor piston may be detached from the motor piston. The upper face of the engine piston a, or one face of the compressor piston d may compress scavenging air.
