Abstract
552,298. Multistage compressors. RICARDO H. R. Sept. 29, 1941, No. 12583. [Class 8(i)] The first-stage piston of a compressor is driven from a crankshaft A and has mechanical valves ; the higher stage pistons are driven from a second shaft B which is itself driven from shaft A at half the speed. The higherstage valves are automatic. The shaft B may actuate the inlet and outlet valves H, J of the first stage, and these valves may serve as crossheads by which higher-stage pistons L, N, P are actuated. Air from the first-stage cylinder may be introduced below the piston P to reduce the pressure difference. A manual inlet throttle valve and intercooler may be provided.
