[Classes 78 (iii), 78 (iv), and 78 (v).] In order that the skip may remain substantially stationary at the bottom of the hoist for a short time for charging without stopping the winding gear, an eye at the end of the winding rope 4 is connected with the drum 2, Fig. 1, or between two adjacent drums 2, 2a, Fig. 6, at a point on or near the axis of the drum, and the rope is fully payed out when the skip is at the charging position. The drum is formed with spiral grooves of decreasing and increasing radius to guide the rope to and from the periphery 3 or 3<a>. As shown in Fig. 6 the rope 4 is secured to a nut 13 which normally rotates with the drums 2, 2<a>, but when the rope is fully payed out the nut travels on the screwed portion of the shaft between the drums and carries the rope from the one drum to the other, providing for a longer period for charging the skip. The charging device, such as a jigging feeder 19 Fig. 7, or the valve of a measuring chamber, may be operated by interrupted spur gearing 16 on a wheel 14 geared to the shaft 1 of the winding gear.
