[Class 78(iv)] In a skip for use with cranes and the like comprising a box-like body open at the top and bottom and having hinged shutters which in their closed position form the bottom of the skip and which are adapted to open downwardly, a rotatable shaft supported by the box, and chains or cables connected to the shutters which are adapted to wind on the shaft when this is rotated, to close the shutters, a locking member is provided which is manually movable from an operative position in which it is disposed in the path of movement of means positively rotated by the shaft whereby the latter is locked against rotation to retain the shutters in their closed position. In the embodiment shown, the shutters 4 of the skip are closed by chains 8 which wind on drums 9 on a shaft 6 when this is rotated by a hand wheel 12 through gearing 13 in a housing 11 secured to the skip. A pawl 14 normally engages one of the gears of this gearing to prevent a load dropping through the. shutters and is disengaged to allow the shutters to open by a lever (not shown) projecting through the gear box 11. A brake band may be placed around the flange 15 on the wheel 12 to provide additional control of the shutters when opening. The shaft 6 may be protected by a shield running longitudinally of the skip above the shaft. In another embodiment in which the shaft 6 projects beyond one end of the skip and is rotated by a tommy bar on this projecting end, a block is provided on the adjacent end wall of the skip which may be swung to or from a position in which it obstructs an arm of the tommy bar. The shaft 6 may be supported, within the skip so as to be adjacent the floor of the skip, being protected by a shield of inverted V-shaped section.
