Abstract
401,868. Liquid - fuel furnaces. ELKINGTON, H. D., 20, Holborn, London.- (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij ; 30, Carel van Bylandtlaan, The Hague.) Oct. 10, 1932, No. 28229. [Class 51 (i).] Combustion products, returning to furnaces.- Liquid fuel in a relatively finely divided or thinly spread but non-atomised state, for example in relatively large drops or in a thin liquid layer or film or small liquid currents, is brought into contact with combustion air mixed with such a proportion of the very hot combustion gases, which are thereby returned to the zone of incipient combustion, that the temperature of the mixture obtained is sufficiently high to cause ignition of the fuel upon the mixture coming in contact therewith. In the form shown in Fig. 1, fuel is supplied in drops to the combustion chamber 1 from a reservoir 3 by a tube 2. Air, supplied by a blower 15 through a tube 4, and combustion products, withdrawn from the chamber 1 through the conduit 6 by the injective action of the air supply, are mixed in and delivered through the nozzle 7. Secondary air is supplied through the pipe 8 and apertures 9. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the combustion chamber 1 is approximately cylindrical, with a tangential air inlet 4 and a central outlet 10. Oil is supplied through a tube 2, and spreads on a plate 14. The air and combustion products assume a spiral path and so intermingle. The inflowing air passing under the plate 14 keeps it cool. In a third form, an elongated chamber is provided at its closed end with a plate on which the oil spreads, and at the other end with a flap-controlled air inlet and an outlet, so that the combustion products pass towards the outlet in contact with the incoming stream of air. Specification 204,951, [Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustion apparatus of], is referred to.
