Abstract
Aliphatic anhydrides are produced by passing the vapour of ethylidine diacetate or its homologues over catalysts of incomplete surface development defined in Specifications 362,462 and 369,283. In examples (1) ethylidine diacetate vapour is passed at 320 DEG C. over asbestos which has been extracted with p concentrated hydrochloric acid for 24 hours at 100 DEG C; (2) ethylidine dipropionate vapour is passed over silica gel which has been treated with 80 per cent phosphoric acid for 30 minutes at 400 DEG C.; (3) ethylidine dipropionate vapour is passed over a catalyst made by precipitating platinum on asbestos which has been extracted with acid.ALSO:Catalysts of incomplete surface development as defined in Specifications 362,462 and 369,283 are made by (1) extracting asbestos with concentrated hydrochloric acid for 24 hours at 100 DEG C. and (2) by treating silica gel with 80 per cent of phosphoric acid for 30 minutes at 400 DEG C.
