Abstract
Itaconic anhydride is prepared by heating itaconic acid in the presence of from about 0.4% to about 4% by weight, based on itaconic acid, of a sulphuric acid or an alkali metal monohydrogen sulphate catalyst, at a temperature of from 165 DEG C. to about 190 DEG C., preferably from 165 DEG C. to about 180 DEG C. The preferred reaction time is about 10-60 minutes. The product may be recovered by vacuum distillation, preferably as it is formed. In order to avoid the condensation of water formed in the reaction during distillation with consequential hydrolysis of the anhydride, a heated condenser may be used, e.g. at about 70-100 DEG C.
