Dec. 24, 1931, No. 35668. Convention date, Jan. 22. [Class 123 (ii).] Locomotive &c. fireboxes comprising watertube walls providing a closed circuit for an intermediary fluid which conveys heat to water in a vessel 1 are formed of U or V-shapedtubes 2 having downflow and upflow legs appertaining to one wall only and connected to steam separators 4, the downflow legs being out of the path of the furnace gases and more or less shielded by the upper legs which may be arranged in the same transverse plane as the downflow legs or in a plane slightly oblique thereto. The firebox crown is formed bv V-shaped tubes 3 connecting the separators on opposite sides of the furnace and may be completed by plates 7, 8. Fluid is maintained in the closed circuit at a level at least up to the crossing point 9 of tubes 3, which is preferably not below the level of the lower part of the separators. The U tubes may be made without welds by bending a straight length of tube about its central part which is of greater internal cross-sectional area so as to avoid a reduction of area at the bend.
