Abstract

Azo dyes are made on the fibre by coupling an arylide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid or of a derivative thereof with the diazo compound of an amine of the formula <FORM:0377271/IV/1> in which both x's = the same alkyl group or the same alkoxy group. In examples the following dyes are made on cotton: (1) 4-(1<1>-methyl) - phenoxyacetylamino-2 : 5 - dimethoxy-1-aniline --> m-nitranilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid (fast pure blue-violet), (2) 4-phenoxyacetylamino-2 : 5-dimethyl-1-aniline --> p-anisidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid (bluish-red), (3) 4-(1<1>-methyl)-phenoxyacetylamino-2 : 5-dimethyl-1-aniline --> p-chloranilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid. Other components specified are (a) coupling components--anilide, 2-methoxy-5-methylanilide, 3 : 4-dichloranilide, o-anisidide, o- and p-phenetidide, 5-chlor-2-toluidide, b -naphthalide, 2-methyl-4-methoxy-anilide, 2-ethoxy-5-methylanilide, o-, m-, or p-toluidide, o- and m-chloranilide, and 4- or 5-chloro-o-toluidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid; (b) diazo components--4-(3<1>-methoxy)-, or 4-(1<1>-chloro-2<1>-methyl)-phenoxyacetyl- and a -naphthyloxyacetyl-amino - 2 : 5 - dimethoxy - 1 - aniline, 4-(3<1>-chloro)-phenoxyacetylamino-2 : 5-dimethyl-1-aniline.
