Abstract

367,419. Pipe joints. HERBERT, F. and STEW ARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd., 41, Oswald Street, Glasgow. Nov. 14, 1930, No. 34379. [Classes 99 (i) and 99 (ii).] A tapered spigot-and-socket joint is formed by reinforcing one pipe end with an external ring b and expanding it to form a tapered socket, and by expanding the spigot end and reinforcing it with an internal ring b<1> such as will maintain the original bore. Conical jointing surfaces are machined on the wall of the pipe at d after the expanding operation, the whole length of the reinforced portion of the spigot being tapered. A lining of bitumen cement may be provided, and recesses h, j are provided in the socket for the lining and for lead packing respectively. The reinforced end of the pipe is held in a mould f, Fig. 4, and is expanded by a tapered mandrel e having a shoulder g which engages the end of the pipe to form corrugations i, k. To form the spigot the pipe is expanded by a shouldered mandrel m in a mould l, Fig. 7, and a ring b<1> is forced into the expanded portion by a cap o applied to the end of the mandrel. The spigot and socket ends may both be expanded by suitably shaped rollers.
