[Class 105.] A railway signal semaphore arm or spectacle 1 is actuated by electric mechanism 5 of the direct-current polarized type to one or other of two positions by rectified current of positive or negative polarity derived from an alternating current which is supplied to one or other of two oppositely arranged rectifiers 13, 18 in accordance with the position of a contact arm 16 of a hand-lever 20. Normally the signal occupies a third or stop position with the lever 20 in the position shown, in which position both rectifiers 13, 18 are disconnected from the line wire 7. An indication apparatus as described in Specification 366,097 is also shown. This comprises a direct - current polarized device 21 supplied with rectified current of positive or negative polarity derived from tappings 29, 33 to a resistance 28 in series with the signal lamp 24 which is continuously fed with alternating current. A signal-controlled contact arm 30 inserts the rectifier 32 in circuit when the signal 1 is in its stop position, and the reverse rectifier 36 when the signal is in' either of its actuated positions showing "caution" or "clear." The indicator 21 correspondingly shows "signal on" or "signal off." Should the lamp 24 fail or the contact arm 30 not register with a contact the indicator shows "signal wrong." The' metal compound rectifiers described in Specification 194,653, [Class 38 (ii), Electric currents, Converting &c.], may be used.
