Abstract
215,535. Peter, L. H., Dell, R., and Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. April 11, 1923. Lamp signals.-In order that failure of a signal lamp may be shown by a lamp or other indicator, but failure of the indicator lamp or circuit shall not disable the signal lamp, the signal is in series with an impedance, the indicator circuit being in shunt between two points of the impedance. Current normally passes from lead 12, Fig. 1, through a danger indication lamp 16, smaller portion of a resistance 18, duplicated danger signal lamp 2, back contact 9 of a relay 7, and return lead 13. The lamp 16 is bridged by the greater portion of resistance 18 which is connected with lead 12 through a conductor 30. A caution signal is given by closure of a switch 15 operated bv a signal lever. Current first passes from lead 12 through conductor 30, relay winding 7, resistance 14, switch 15 to lead 13. Relay 7 breaks the circuit through lamp 2 at contact 9, and also closes contact 6, completing a circuit through duplicated caution signal lamp 3 across the winding of relay 7. The caution indicating lamp 17 is connected in shunt between adjustable points of resistance 14. Owing to the high resistance of the relay winding 7, the indication lamp 17 does not glow unless the shunt circuit through lamp 3 is closed. Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to a system of the kind described in Specification 27275/11. An indication lamp 16 is shown only in conjunction with the danger signal 2, but the arrangement may also be applied to the cautionary signal 3. The primary 19 of a transformer 20 is supplied from leads 12, 13. The signal lamp 2 in series with an impedance 24 and resistance 25 is connected across a portion of the secondary winding 21 by conductors 22, 23. The lamp 16 is in shunt across impedance 24 through conductors 22, 26. Impedance 24 and lamp 2 are also bridged by the secondary of a transformer 28, the primary of which, in series with signal lamp 3 and switch 15, is connected across the secondary 21 of transformer 20. On closure of switch 15 transformer 28 functions to divert current from lamp 2 and impedance 24 through lamp 3.
