[Class 74 (ii).] The web-holders, sinkers, or like instruments of a circular machine are selected for patterning purposes by a device comprising a disc 1 having radially disposed jacks 7 having one or more butts 10 so that they can be depressed as desired by cams or levers 101 to engage the sinkers. The cams 11 are held inoperative by springs 16 and are actuated by segmental cams 19 or other members of a pattern disc 17. After selection by the cams 11, the jacks 7 are raised by a cam 15. The pattern disc 17 is rotated by pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 22, 23, and the disc 1 is rotated by gearing from the needle cylinder. To enable the patterning to be nullified, cams 32, 33 controlled by the main pattern drum, are provided. The cam 32, when raised to operative position, raises all depressed jacks so that none of the sinkers is actuated ; the cam 33 is raised to such height as to engage butts 40 provided only upon the jacks 7 corresponding to the needles forming the foot bottom of a stocking, so that patterning may be continued on the instep while a plain foot bottom is formed. The disc 17 may be replaced by a pattern drum having its axis arranged horizontally above the levers 11. The invention is applicable to both rotary and stationary needle cylinder machines, and to rib and plain machines.
